A community space

Our Future Hospital (OFH) is the programme set up by the Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, following its inclusion as one of the original 40 hospitals in the Government&rsquo;s <a href="https://engage.dhsc.gov.uk/nhs-recovery/40-new-hospitals/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">New Hospital Programme.</a> <iframe title="vimeo-player" src="https://player.vimeo.com/video/981964941?h=ea7f1e213e" width="640" height="360" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="" class="fr-draggable"></iframe> It is a ten-year rolling programme to renew, refurbish or replace significant parts of the hospital to keep and expand NHS acute hospital services for the people and communities of Northern Devon. Through OFH, we aim to deliver on our promise to modernise North Devon District Hospital (NDDH). We made this promise because we believe in order to meet growing demand for hospital care in a sustainable way, we need to rebuild and redevelop critical parts of our estate. If we don&rsquo;t, services will become unreliable and inefficient, and we will see temporary closures as we need to repair equipment and facilities. OFH is the single biggest investment in the hospital since it was built and is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to upgrade our current estate. It will deliver modern, integrated care for patients and improved working facilities for staff, with high-quality urgent and emergency care in specialist facilities. As the most remote hospital in mainland England, it is crucial that health services continue to be delivered in North Devon. This is why we aim to: <ol><li style="text-align: left;">Update our existing estate to meet our current and future needs and standards.</li><li style="text-align: left;">Invest in our local hospital so it can continue delivering critical services to one of the country&rsquo;s most remote populations. It will provide more modern, fit for purpose facilities, integrated care for patients, while providing staff with improved working environments, enabling the delivery of high-quality urgent and emergency care alongside planned routine and specialist services. </li><li style="text-align: left;">Focus on improving accommodation and wellbeing facilities for staff. This will make our hospital a great place to work, thereby boosting recruitment and retention levels, which is crucial to delivering a sustainable service into the future.</li><li style="text-align: left;">Modernise the hospital. He emulated its style, creating an <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Impression_of_depth_in_The_Lord_of_the_Rings" title="Impression of depth in The Lord of the Rings">impression of depth</a> and adopting an <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Decline_and_fall_in_Middle-earth#Fading" title="Decline and fall in Middle-earth">elegiac tone</a>. Tolkien admired the way that the poem, written by a Christian looking back at a <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paganism" title="Paganism">pagan</a> past, used symbolism without becoming <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allegory" title="Allegory">allegorical</a>. The names of races, including <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ent" title="Ent">ents</a>, <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orc" title="Orc">orcs</a>, and <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elf_(Middle-earth)" title="Elf (Middle-earth)">elves</a>, and placenames such as <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isengard" title="Isengard">Orthanc</a> and <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rohan_(Middle-earth)#Capital" title="Rohan (Middle-earth)">Meduseld</a>, derive from Beowulf.
